Gulf LNG Liquefaction Project: About LNG

What is LNG? Simply put, LNG is natural gas in its liquid form. Natural gas is converted to the liquid form by cooling it to -260° Fahrenheit. This reduces its volume 600 times and allows the product to be transported much more efficiently. LNG is an odorless, non-toxic and non-corrosive liquid. If an LNG spill occurred it would not result in a slick, oily residue because it evaporates and disperses quickly.

LNG is not stored under pressure and when in its liquid state it is not explosive or flammable. An incident resulting in a release of LNG could result in a fire, but only if there is a precise concentration of LNG vapor in the air (5% - 15%) and a source of ignition.
