Welding and Fabrication of Natural Gas Processing Equipment

Posted on Wednesday, September 15, 2021

Natural gas is a safe, dependable, and responsible energy choice that serves as a cornerstone of North America’s energy, environmental and economic future. Natural gas heats our homes, powers businesses, fuels vehicles and marine vessels, and serves as a key component in many of our most vital industrial processes. Natural gas is the Earth’s cleanest fossil fuel. Created naturally underground by years of pressure and decay, natural gas is composed almost entirely of methane, with trace amounts of other gases, including ethane, propane, butane, and pentane. Natural gas is a domestic natural resource that is colorless and odorless in its original state.

Before natural gas reaches the market, the gas is processed using gas processing equipment that treats the gas to meet pipeline quality specifications.  Welding and fabrication are key processes employed in the industry to manufacture gas processing equipment. &Fabrication is the entire process of creating metal from beginning to end. For example, steel fabrication is the production of metal structures using a range of processes such as cutting, welding, and assembling. In contrast, welding is only one part of the fabrication process, which involves using heat and electrical inputs to join two pieces of metals together.

The Equipment Needed

Processing gas comprises a set of complex activities and a range of different types of equipment, tools, and techniques. The latest technology paired with high-efficiency equipment is key to successfully produce high-quality gas processing units.

Kinder Morgan Treating uses the latest in software platform solutions, welding automation technology, flux recovery units, remote inspection tools, and has effective welding procedures in place to maximize productivity. Our 65-acre, ISO 9001 Certified & ASME Code facility in Odessa, Texas fabricates new equipment for purchase and refurbishes used equipment for lease.

This includes Amine, Stabilizer, and Dehydration (Dehy) plants, as well as vessels and tanks. Our welding and fabrication facility is fully equipped to fabricate pipe and assemble movable modular piping systems. Our welding and fabrication facility has 80,000 square feet of covered space with 19 overhead cranes and the latest in automated welding equipment. Other dedicated fabrication areas include our 11 vessel in-shop welding stations, paint and sandblasting facilities, pipe spooling stations, and modular assembly shops.

We are a leading ASME pressure vessel fabrication facility and have the full capabilities to weld modular piping skid systems. The welding and fabrication of pressure vessels require an ASME Certified facility with National Board Registration certifications. Kinder Morgan Treating LP – Odessa offers all of these certifications in conjunction with the ISO 9001:2015 certification. Our welding and fabrication team is experienced in meeting ASME Section VIII, ASME B31.3, and other code and customer requirements.

We use the latest equipment in our manufacturing process and partner with industry leaders to fabricate gas processing units such as pressure vessels, piping systems, boilers, towers, stabilizer units, dehydration units, amine regeneration systems, and other equipment.

Welding and Fabrication

Gas treating and gas processing equipment consists of pressure vessels, piping systems, and other equipment that is manufactured using standard industry practices and techniques.

The most commonly used practice in fabricating gas processing equipment is the welding process. During the fabrication process, manual, semi-automatic, and automatic welding methods are used to manufacture gas processing equipment. Our ASME Code facility employs ASME Section IX certified welders to fabricate all gas processing equipment including pressure vessels, piping systems, and skid structures.

During the upstream process, welding is used to create gathering lines and support structures. During midstream, welding is used to create storage vessels and transmission pipelines. The pipelines will transport the crude oil or gas over long distances all across the country. In the downstream sector, welding is used to create storage and transport vessels, where welding will be most commonly used.

Incorporating various welding techniques, including automated welding implementations in the oil and gas industry has several benefits. Quality, speed, and efficiency are just some of the benefits that welding provides for the oil and gas industry. Welding is also cost-effective and versatile to fit every need you may have. Speed and efficiency are important when trying to get gas from point A to point B.
